A garage door is usually the largest opening on a home. If wind pressure pushes it in, air rushes into the house and pressurizes it from inside, which can help lift the roof. That is why Florida's building code is strict about them.
A hurricane-rated door is built and tested as a complete system: heavier-gauge steel or reinforced sections, horizontal struts, stronger hinges, end stiles and track anchored to the framing. Each approved door carries a design pressure rating, and your opening needs one that meets the wind load for your location. Impact-rated models add resistance to wind-borne debris.
Signs Your Door Needs an Upgrade
No approval label
Rated doors carry a label, usually on an inside edge, listing the product approval and design pressure. No label often means no rating.
Door flexes in strong wind
If the door bows inward or rattles hard in a summer storm, it likely lacks the struts and bracing to handle hurricane-force pressure.
Older single-layer steel
Thin, unreinforced doors installed decades ago were not built to today's wind requirements and are a common weak point in storm damage.
Getting the Rating Right
A rated door only performs as tested if every part goes in as tested.
- 1
Confirm the wind load
We measure the opening and determine the required design pressure for your home, based on exposure and size, before choosing a door.
- 2
Match an approved product
You choose from doors with Florida product approval that meet or exceed that rating, including insulated, windowed and impact options.
- 3
Install to the approval
Jamb fasteners, track brackets and struts are installed exactly as the approval drawings specify, so the work is ready for permit inspection.
Hurricane Door Questions
- What is the difference between wind-rated and impact-rated?
- A wind-rated door is tested to resist a specific positive and negative design pressure. An impact-rated door also passes a missile impact test that simulates flying debris, which matters in high-velocity hurricane zones and for doors with glass. Both need product approval; your location and code requirements decide which applies.
- Can I just brace my existing door?
- Retrofit bracing kits exist, but they only count if the kit is approved for your specific door model and installed exactly to its instructions. Many older doors have no approved retrofit at all. In those cases, replacing the door with a rated model is the reliable route.
- Can a rated door affect my homeowners insurance?
- It can. Florida insurers often offer wind mitigation credits for protected openings, and a garage door with proper approval and design pressure is part of that picture. A wind mitigation inspection documents what you have. Ask your insurance agent how a rated door would apply to your policy.
Get Ahead of Hurricane Season
Rated doors take time to order and permit, so the best moment to start is well before a storm is in the forecast.
