A typical two-car door weighs well over a hundred pounds, and the springs carry nearly all of it. The opener only guides the door. When a spring snaps, the door becomes dead weight and the opener cannot safely lift it.
Most standard springs are rated for roughly 10,000 cycles, which works out to several years of daily use. We replace torsion springs above the door and extension springs along the tracks, matched by wire size, length and diameter. On doors with two springs, we usually recommend replacing both so they wear evenly.
How a Broken Spring Shows Itself
A loud bang from the garage
Torsion springs often break with a sharp crack that sounds like a gunshot. Afterward you may see a visible gap in the coil above the door.
Opener hums but the door won't rise
The motor runs, maybe lifts the door a few inches, then gives up. Without spring help the door is simply too heavy for it.
Door feels heavy or drops fast
A balanced door stays put when lifted halfway by hand. If yours falls, or takes real effort to raise, the springs are weak or broken.
Spring Replacement, Step by Step
Spring work is dangerous without the right bars and training, so we handle it methodically.
- 1
Measure, don't guess
We measure wire gauge, inside diameter and length, and weigh the door if needed, so the new spring actually fits the load it carries.
- 2
Safe unwinding and install
Tension is released with proper winding bars, never screwdrivers. Cables, drums and the center bearing are inspected while the system is unloaded.
- 3
Tension set, door tested
We wind to the correct turns, check balance at several heights, then run the opener and test auto-reverse before calling it finished.
Spring Repair Questions
- Is changing a spring a DIY job?
- We advise against it. A wound torsion spring stores enough energy to break bones, and slipped winding bars cause serious injuries every year. Extension springs without safety cables can whip loose when they snap. Leave this one to someone with the proper bars and training.
- Should both springs be replaced at once?
- If your door has two springs and one breaks, the other has seen the same number of cycles and is usually close behind. Replacing the pair keeps tension even and saves a second visit. We will point out if the remaining spring looks newer, and you can decide.
- Are longer-life springs worth it?
- For a door that cycles several times a day, higher-cycle springs can make sense. They use heavier wire and longer coils, so they last more cycles before fatigue sets in. For a lightly used door, standard springs sized correctly usually serve well for years.
Broken Spring? Leave the Door Closed
Don't force it with the opener; get the spring replaced and the door balanced properly instead.
